What to Expect at Your Tree Farm Minis
Tree farms make a magical backdrop for holiday photos, but they’re also working farms, so a little preparation goes a long way.
Here’s what to keep in mind before your session:
Be weather-ready: Atlanta fall can be pretty unpredictable, with 70 and sunny one day to 55 and overcast another. In addition to this, farms can be chilly or muddy, especially in late fall. Dress in layers and choose shoes that can handle uneven ground. My recommended favs are boots or sneakers with good traction.
Expect some crowds: Weekends in November and December are great for photos plus the experience due to so much of the farm being up and running. Luckily, in the case of our sessions at Bottoms Christmas Tree Farm, we have 60 acres to shoot in so crowds aren’t a worry.
Plan for extra exploring time: During our sessions we’ll have fun and will get your photos done quickly. That said, there’s tons to see and do if you’d like to start feeling the magic of Christmas a bit early. With farm hayrides, hot cocoa, and smores from Nov. 22nd and on, prep to wander a bit and enjoy the season after your session.
What to wear for your mini session:
Somehow the most difficult part of the session; picking out and coordinating you and your families outfits can seem like a daunting task. Hopefully these tips help take a bit of the stress off your shoulders.
Stick to natural, classic tones. Some great color combinations include:
Gray, beige, and touches of black
Green, brown, beige, or mustard tones
Navy, red plaids, and neutral grays or browns
Tips for creating a cohesive look:
Layer up: Sweaters, knits, flannels, and wool coats add texture and warmth. Layers also photograph beautifully outdoors.
Keep kids comfortable: Jackets, vests, leggings, tights, and fun accessories like scarves or headbands help keep them cozy and expressive.
Add subtle festive touches: A plaid scarf, knit hat, or textured accessory can bring a hint of the holidays without stealing the show.
Choose practical footwear: Tree farms can be muddy or uneven. Waterproof boots or weather-friendly shoes are your best bet.
Pro tip: Aim to coordinate, not match. Choose two or three main colors, mix in textures, and let each person’s outfit reflect their personality for a look that feels natural and effortless.
