Fall Family Photo Outfit Guide

When it comes to outfits, the biggest thing is to plan a little ahead and make sure everyone feels comfortable and confident. Coordinating is great, but you definitely don’t need to all show up in matching khakis and white shirts. Instead, pick one piece with a fun print like florals, stripes, or plaid and build the rest of the family’s outfits around it.

Neutrals always photograph beautifully, especially in fall. Think creams, grays, tans, soft pinks, deep blues, and other earthy “autumn tones.” Adding a pop of color can also be an awesome way to zhuzh up your family’s outfits. Adding in some jewel tones, especially in fall hues (think reds, yellows, and greens) makes you stand out and can make a photo with some beautiful contrast.

Try to skip big logos/graphics since they can pull focus away from your family. Keeping things simple and coordinated will let your personalities (and those sweet connections) shine in the photos.

And if you’re feeling stuck, don’t worry. I’ve put together a Pinterest board with lots of outfit inspiration to make things easy!

Neutral Earth Tones

One of the reasons fall photos are so magical is the gorgeous natural backdrop — from the golden leaves and soft grasses to the warm glow of sunset. Choosing neutral earth tones lets you look stunning all while never taking away from the beautiful fall scenery around you. Think browns, greens, grays, creams, and muted reds. These shades blend seamlessly with nature without overpowering the scene, which creates a perfect, balanced photograph. Another perk of neutrals is that they layer well together. For example: a cream sweater paired with olive pants and a soft plaid scarf can create a cozy yet elegant look. They’re also versatile enough to work for every member of the family, making it easy to coordinate without being too “matchy.”

Jewel Tones

If you’d like your photos to have a little more vibrance and personality, jewel tones are a gorgeous option for fall. These rich, bold colors like emerald green, mustard yellow, ruby red, sapphire blue, and deep plum stand out beautifully against the softer hues of fallen leaves and golden fields. Jewel tones bring energy and contrast to your images, making them especially eye-catching when printed for holiday cards or framed in your home. You don’t need to dress the entire family in jewel tones; even one or two pops of color through a dress, sweater, or accessory can create a striking focal point while still keeping the overall look balanced.

Fall Florals

Florals aren’t just for springtime. In fact, they can be the perfect way to add a unique touch to your fall photo session. Autumn florals often feature muted or earthy colors that tie in beautifully with the season’s palette, giving you the pattern and texture of florals without feeling out of place. A flowy dress with subtle floral prints in shades of burgundy, mustard, or forest green can look stunning when paired with solid-colored outfits on the rest of the family. Florals also add depth and softness to group photos, breaking up too many solid colors. Don’t be afraid to mix in a small floral print for one family member while keeping everyone else in neutrals! It creates some variety while still looking coordinated.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is to have fun. These sessions aren’t meant to be stiff or stressful — they’re about capturing your family exactly as you are: real, joyful, and beautifully imperfect.
