Family Photo Prep Guide
So you’ve booked your family photoshoot, now what?
If you’re like me, after you’ve booked your session the panic starts to set in. What to wear, how to wrangle the kids, etc. I prepped this guide for you to make this shoot as easy as it can be.
In this guide I’ll go over what a family session includes, some outfit advice, and some tips for the day of your session.
Let’s get started!
What does a family photo session include?
I have three different options when it comes to family shoots, each of which include 50+ edited, ready to hang or post photos:
$350
Digital Family Session
Session includes one hour of shooting in a gorgeous location.
$425
Digital + Film Family Session
In addition to the 50+ digital images in your catalog you will receive 20+ hand scanned, timeless film photographs to treasure. The scans from your film will be included in your session gallery three weeks from the session date.
$500
Film Family Session
If you opt for a full film session, you will be receiving 50+ film images scanned digitally to your inbox within three weeks from your shoot date.

What should I wear?
Deciding what to wear can be a stressful affair (I had to include the rhyme). Here are some tips to help you and your family coordinate the perfect outfits for your pictures. I’m also positive you’ll already have the perfect outfit just waiting to be discovered in your closet.
Rule One: Keep it Simple
The best outfits for your family shoot are going to be simple. By keeping patterns to a minimum you’re already ahead of the game. The following photo is a great example of keeping the patterns limited. Her dress has a simple pattern on it, but the rest of the family kept to little or no pattern so there wasn’t any clashing between their looks.
Rule Two: Use Similar Colors
You don’t have to all be wearing the exact same color in your family photos for it to match! The Curtis Family is a great example of using complimenting colors in their session. They all wore a beautiful fall color palette, but almost every color was different. By using different hues of orange and blue and patterns that incorporated those, they were able to get the perfect look for timeless family photos.
Now that you have your outfit put together, here are some tips for the day of your shoot!
Day of Session Tips
Arrive several minutes early to your session! Getting your family out the door is half the battle. The last thing you want is for your children to feel rushed & stressed before portraits! The best part is, if you plan to be early, you’ll arrive on time (at least that’s the case with me and my daughter).
Bring a brush with you. I know it sounds silly, but a brush is a life saver, especially if there’s any wind on the day of your shoot. Bringing the brush just makes the day that much easier for you.
Bring a couple of toys with you. When it comes to keeping baby’s attention, toys can be so helpful and they can ensure that we get some shots where they’re looking at the camera.
