Top Five Fall Family Activities in Atlanta

With the leaves changing in the Atlanta area, it’s the perfect time to indulge in some fun fall family activities. Luckily, being in one of the largest metro areas in the U.S. makes it so there’s plenty to do for the fall season.

With this being our first autumn in Atlanta, we’ve made sure to jam pack it with every fun thing we can think of. That’s one of the unexpected perks of moving, you have all the time in the world to explore.

I’ve included prices and locations for each of the items on my list. Without further ado, here’s our list of the top five things to do in the Metro Atlanta area this fall season:

My daughter and I at Scottsdale Farms in Milton.

  1. Visit a Pumpkin Patch

My favorite pumpkin patch of those I visited has to be Scottsdale Farms located in Milton, Georgia. Only thirty minutes from Buckhead, this local nursery converts into a child’s fall haven for the Halloween season. After pulling into the parking area (which is free I might add), my daughter and I were greeted by rows of adorable white and orange pumpkins. “Whether you need a small pumpkin that weighs less than a pound, or a giant pumpkin that weighs in at a whopping 150lbs, we’ve got the perfect pumpkin for you. You’ll find all shapes, sizes and colors of pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks, hay bales and decorations” (Scottdale Farms Website).

In addition to the adorable pumpkin patch, Scottsdale Farms provides an awesome family play area for $12 for those aged four and up. The family fun area included a zipline, a hayride, a very kid friendly corn maze (there was only one way to go so the littles won’t get lost), goats, chickens, and cows. The maze itself isn’t stroller friendly due to very tight corridors, but is fun to stroll through with baby in arms. Even though my little is only six months old, she absolutely loved the hayride and getting to say hello to the farm’s adorable animals.

2. Get Lost in a Corn Maze

While this corn maze may be a drive from the city, it was well worth it. Located at Southern Belle Farms in McDonough, Georgia, this Fall Festival has much more to offer than just the corn maze, although even if you’re only going for the maze, it’s worth it in my opinion. Pricing to enter the farm varies from $13.95 on weekdays to $16.95 on weekends. I would recommend buying tickets and reserving a time online as it can get very busy, especially this close to Halloween. My family and I started the corn maze on a toasty September day and managed to get ourselves completely lost. After a 45 minute trek through the maze, making plenty of wrong turns and meeting many a dead end, we made it out! Stroller-wise, we attempted to bring ours, which I’m not sure I would recommend. I think a carrier would be a great option so you don’t have to worry about getting stuck, but if you’re looking for a workout the stroller may be a good option.

Corn maze aside, Southern Belle Farms has a lot to offer. With fields of u-pick fruits, a pumpkin patch, slides, farm demonstrations, a hayride, pig races and more, this is definitely a top fall destination for us now. From my family’s experience, I would recommend going on a weekday if you can. Check times online for the fun fall events to make sure that you’re going at a good time to catch everything as during weekdays things can be a bit more spread out. Weekends are fun as well, but go expecting crowds.

Southern Belle Farms is a new autumn staple in our household, so we’ll see you next year!

3. Picnic in Piedmont Park

Another fall favorite of my families has been going and picnicking in one of Atlanta’s beautiful parks. Our favorite park so far has been Piedmont Park in downtown Atlanta. With views of the Atlanta skyline, Piedmont is hard to beat. We set up our blanket on the field known as the meadow and let our baby play while we were able to soak in the views and some family time. Pricing for the park varies based off of where you park, but there’s plenty of free parking off of Monroe Drive if you have the time to look.

While you’re there, it’s a great place to snap some family pictures and spot some of our changing leaves which have started popping up this past week. So bring some cozy blankets and your favorite snacks to enjoy a free and beautiful fall activity with the family.

4. Haunted Seas at the Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium doesn’t joke around with Halloween. Every part of the aquarium seemed to be decked out with spooky skeletons and jack-o-lanterns, including the tanks! The Georgia Aquarium is a little more pricey than our other options, but if you’re a local and think you would go to the aquarium more than a couple of times, buying the membership can give you year-round access at the price of two tickets. Even if you’re only visiting, I would recommend going to see the incredible tanks if you have the time.

The festivities include new themed dolphin and sea lion shows, story time on Saturdays from 3-5 pm, trick or treating Saturday and Sunday from 2-6 pm, and more included with your aquarium pass. After we had our fun at the aquarium, we were also able to explore the beautiful Centennial Park to see some fall colors and the monuments from when the Olympics were in Atlanta in 1996.

5. Attend a Fall Festival

There are many Fall Festivals in Atlanta to choose from, but my favorite has to be the Candler Park Fall Festival. Although this years Fall Fest has passed, I still think it would be a shame to leave out one of the largest Fall Festivals in Metro Atlanta. According to their website, over 20,000 visitors come every year to shop some of the amazing vendors and to listen to live music which is performing both days from 11am to 7pm. The best part about this event, is that it’s free (except for the cute fall trinkets and food you go home with).

If you have older children, they’ll love the fair rides that come every year and the little ones will love dancing to the music and shopping with mom and dad.

Morris Raney Real Estate has said “Where kids can be kids, Fall Fest will provide entertainment for festival-going children and their grown-ups.  This growing area of the festival will evoke a feeling from yesteryear: a carnival-like atmosphere with rides, live shows, roving entertainers, and sweet treats to satisfy the child in everyone!” I couldn’t agree more.
